In this introductory lesson, we’ll talk about the goals of this course and learn what harmony is; we’ll explore Psalm 133 and why harmony is important in our worship sets; and you’ll discover why harmony is entirely a learnable skill, even if it has always seemed too difficult and out of reach!

Hi, Charmaine (and everyone else). I tend to type long comments (sorry) and I’m not even sure that this is being posted in the right place. I’m performing background vocals for the first time in my home church this weekend (I hope they have my mic turned down…). We’re performing “Touch of Heaven” by Hillsong and a couple other songs. I’m most concerned with “Touch of Heaven”, though. I’m a Bass 1 and our worship leader is more in the Tenor range. I can almost hit the high notes in the song, but I’m not sure where I should actually be singing. I can either sing really low or high and I’m having difficulty finding the middle ground. This may come down to my need for ear training and I’m working on that thanks to your videos. I realize that it may be too late for this, but a video tutorial on this may help me. I know from previous conversations with our worship leader that he wants me to sing in a higher range because it makes the music brighter. From our Planning Center file, it appears that we’re singing in the key of A. Not even sure how that affects me… Any advice?

Hey! Exciting that you’ll be doing BV’s for the first time! It’s hard to comment without hearing you sing, and I’m not able to make a video tutorial on this specific one, sorry! My best recommendation would be to submit an “Analyze My Voice” (available via the Worship Vocalist store) and I could get my feedback to you asap, or, even better—post a video of you singing the harmony as best you can in the Worship Vocalist Peer Feedback Facebook group and you’ll get feedback from community members! https://www.facebook.com/groups/worshipvocalistpeerfeedback
