05 Finding Your First Note

People always ask: “how do I find the first harmony note in a song?” In this lesson, using the basic building blocks of harmony—intervals and chords—we’ll learn where to look for the first harmony note, and how to get quicker at finding it in a song.

I have loved this material, I can’t thank you enough. I have recently been accepted on a worship team. I am working on harmony and have been doing the harmony courses you’ve provided for about 8 months. I did not grow up in choir. I played in secular bands and i did not sing much harmony. I am still learning. I have grown so much through your courses. However, I have not been successful in finding someone to sing with. On the worship team I just sing melody because all the harmony pieces are taken. I really want to do harmony and continue to grow with ear training and skill. Do you have any recommendations? I paid a few girls, but they weren’t teachers . They had grown up in the church and learned that way. I feel so limited.

Maybe you could also practice by recording music…singing covers and adding harmonies to the recording.

My best recommendation is to just keep working on your harmony skills, and hopefully you will be able to use them on your worship team in the future!

I know some harmonies from my childhood. My mother used to sing with us. I can only use the harmonies of songs I already know-things I did kind of instinctively. I’m lacking the ability of feeling it in new songs, but I think your ideas will going to help me.
