Sing along with Worship Vocalist coach Charmaine Brown as she leads you through a set of vocal exercises that use pharyngeal resonance to develop a blended mix of your chest and head voice registers.
This pharyngeal mix workout is designed especially for vocalists who have already spent time building their head and chest registers, because mix voice requires both the head and chest voice muscles to have sufficient strength. So if you have already been working on building your chest and head voice registers, but you still experience a flip in the middle of your voice or a significant difference in the tonal quality between your lower and higher range, this is a great workout for you!
Want to build your voice from the ground up? Take time to go through the Worship Vocalist Discover Your Voice course, where you’ll learn how your voice works, exercises to build your chest voice and head voice, and then how to start mixing them together for a seamless tone!
Some tips as you’re going through the workout:
- This workout has scales for both male and female range singers. Just rest your voice as the other range is being worked on!
- Make sure to drink lots of water before and after.
- Listen carefully to the demonstrations and mimic the sound qualities as best you can.
- Be patient with your voice and don’t expect perfection (it’s totally normal to experience your voice breaking and cracking at first!)—give yourself lots of grace as you’re finding these vocal coordinations!
- Only sing in a range that’s comfortable for you. Feel free to sit out for a few scales if it feels too high or too low for your voice.
- If you feel excessive strain or notice a raspy sound as you do an exercise, skip it and move onto the next exercise.
- Be intentional and focused as you do the exercises—keep your body and mind energized and believe that you CAN and WILL see improvement in your voice as you are diligent to train it with these strategic exercises!
- After the workout, take a 10-15 minute break to allow the voice to recover.
