What A Beautiful Name (Hillsong)

Some tips on how to sing one of my new fav songs: “What a Beautiful Name” (Hillsong)! Anybody else think Brooke Fraser’s songs are awesome?! Check out this video for tips on how to:

One thing I’m struggling with is hoe I sound on the ‘nay’ of name As well as the delicate light 1st Chorus of the song.. Do you have any videos on how to maintain maintain power But in a lighter voice?

  Hi Hillary! I teach on that exact concept in my Master Your Voice lessons—but it is a more advanced concept so it is not taught until Part 2 of the course. So if you haven’t gone through that course yet, that’s what I would recommend for you!

So I have a background in classical singing so the range of contemporary songs is never a struggle for me. What is a struggle is that I’m trained to sing through my passagio smoothly so I can’t seem to capture those cool whines, squeaks and breathy breaks at the end of passages. How do I achieve this lol.?

  Hey Tricia! It sounds like perhaps you are singing in all head voice, which is great for singing in a classical context but it doesn’t sound contemporary, and it tends to lack power and dynamics in the low range (and also you lose out on contemporary stylistic techniques like you’re talking about!). The best thing you can be working on is building your chest voice and pharyngeal resonance so you’ll be able to sing in a contemporary style—you will need to “re-learn” how to sing, in a way, but it’s so worth it!

These tips are gold! Swapping out the lyrics to get the right resonance is so helpful! I love this song, and I’m excited to sing it again on Sunday – and I feel much more prepared to do it well.

I don’t like the way I sound when I sing the phrase, ‘Now re-vealed in You our Christ’. The word re-vealed is problematic for me any suggestions?

  Yes, oftentimes the “EE” vowel sound is problematic up in the mid to higher range! Open your mouth a bit more and try substituting an IH sound for the EE as you sing… what this does is helps release tension in the throat and creates a bit more openness… but still sounds like the word! Think RIH – VIHLED… as you sing… and see how it goes!
