Top Supplements for Vocal Recovery

When your voice is struggling post-sickness or strain, or you feel like you’re coming down with a cold, it can be helpful to take supplements to help bring down inflammation and support your body’s natural, God-given healing processes. But… nothing takes the place of good nutrition, hydration & rest, so make sure to prioritize these things, as they are essential for your body!

Please note that the information here is for educational purposes only, and is not intended to replace medical advice. Make sure to check with your doctor to see if these supplements are safe for you to use, especially if you are taking any prescription medications.

Here are some good vocal supplements to consider:

Throat-soothing herbal tea.

Teas that contain ingredients like licorice root, marshmallow root, slippery elm and ginger are known to soothe the throat and reduce inflammation.

Extra tip: Look for tea with organic ingredients!

Sickness-fighting raw honey.

Honey is known to soothe the throat and have antibacterial properties, which makes it a great choice for when your body is fighting sickness. It also acts as a natural cough reducer. There is lots of good-quality honey available—look for one that is 100% pure (no added ingredients), raw (unpasteurized) and unfiltered (so it maintains healthy things in it, like bee pollen and propolis).

Extra tip: Avoid adding honey to super-hot tea, as high heat destroys some of the main benefits of honey.

Immune-boosting throat lozenges.

Lozenges that contain ingredients like honey and zinc are throat-soothing and may lower inflammation and reduce the length of sickness.

Extra tip: Avoid lozenges with added sugar (which can cause inflammation) or menthol (which acts as an anaesthetic and can actually irritate the throat!).

Inflammation-reducing turmeric.

The active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, is known to reduce inflammation, which makes it a great choice for struggling, inflamed vocal folds and muscles!

Extra tip: Look for a turmeric supplement with black pepper added, which helps the body absorb the curcumin more efficiently. Also—infuse your cooking with turmeric powder and black pepper!

When your voice is struggling, you can also try steaming with hot water.

Here’s how:

  1. Fill a bowl with very hot water.
  2. Lean your head over the bowl and place a towel over your head and the bowl to trap the steam.
  3. Inhale deeply for a few minutes.

Also, if your throat is sore, it’s important to take time off of singing and all vocal exercise until it feels better—as singing on a sore throat can cause damage. But, once the sore throat is gone, studies show that doing gentle vocal rehab exercises is actually better than full vocal rest because these exercises actually encourage healing in the vocal tissues. Check out the Worship Vocalist Vocal Rehab Routine course, where you’ll learn important principles for healthy vocal rehabilitation, as well as strategic vocal rehab exercises you can use to help your voice recover.

Above all, trust the Lord to heal your voice! Let go of all stress and anxiety, and trust that He alone is your Healer, and that He will give you wisdom on how to take care of your voice well as you recover.

Blessings!
